Pregnancy Updates

(You know, since this is what is going on in my life right now)...

How far Along: 27 weeks, 5 days.  Sorry, no photo.

Size of baby: About the length of a rutabaga, a vegetable (?) that I have literally never come in contact with.  Baby is about 14 inches long and weighs a little over 1.5 pounds.  Judging by the amount of weight I've gained, he/she should weigh about 20 pounds by  now.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: +22 pounds. You read it right.

Maternity clothes: See above.

Gender: It's a surprise!  Kind of.  Baby's gender is written on a paper and sealed in an envelope.  Dave and I aren't sure what we want to do yet!  We kind of want to keep it a secret, but I'm not great with secrets.  Vamos a ver!

Movement: Yes.  On a related note, unborn babies love ice cream.  It's a fact.

Sleep: I go to bed early and usually lie awake tossing and turning between about 2 and 4 a.m.  I still only have one bathroom break per night.

What I miss:  Hmm, being smaller?

Cravings: The usual.  I usually start feeling like I need a dessert around 8:00 every night.  It makes for somewhat agitated evenings.

Symptoms:  Hugeness, heartburn, shooting pains down the sides of my butt, which I have recently learned have a name: sciatica.  Awesome.  I am considering seeing a chiro for the first time ever in life (even though they freak me out a little).

Best Moment this Week: Another ultrasound with a finger-sucking, chubby-cheeked baby.  Also, I took a nap with Laci* this week.  She was curled up next to me with her head on my belly, but baby kept kicking her in the face so much, she groaned and had to pick a new spot.  It seemed pretty funny at the time.

*If you know me, you know that Laci is a wiener dog.  I tend to not nap with other random females.

Parenting Firsts: The Stomach Bug Edition

Poor Myles got hit with the pukes yesterday.  Genius Mama thought, "Oh man, this milk must be bad already" as she puked up her entire morning sippy cup.  After the next barf session 30 minutes later, brilliant ad said "Oh yea, you're not going to church today."

In short, a sweet baby with a virus increases your laundry tenfold and breaks your dadgum heart.  When my boo was throwing up and crying, it made me cry, too!  So much for being a relaxed parent.  It seems today that she is done getting sick, but I am also basically starving her per doctor's recommendation.  Now the pobrecita who loves food as much as her daddy is walking around the kitchen crying every few minutes because I haven't fed her anything in a while.  Thank you Lord for making this a quick virus.

Maybe it sounds like a leap, but watching my sick baby has made me think a lot about Jesus.  Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, but when you're sobbing over your child throwing up all morning, you wonder how God watched his son be slaughtered on a cross.  It's so much bigger.  It's so crazy.

Crazy love.

Ten on Tuesday is making me nervous

Provided by a non-blogging, math teacher friend of RootsandRings.  Click here to link up!  For the record, I have a terrible memory, and I'm not great at math.  These two things make it totally pointless for me to do ToT today!  Oh well!

0.01×10^2. What was your best/worst day in math class?
Um, I have absolutely no idea.  I guess my best day would be at freshman orientation when I took a placement test and scored high enough to take zero math classes in college.  Yay for pointless liberal arts degrees!

20×10^-1. Who was your favorite/least favorite math teacher? Why?

Once again, I can't remember.  I was the kind of kid who usually liked my teachers...  I'll say that my favorite math teacher is the one I student taught with last year FBCA.  If your kid is going there in third grade, Mrs. Pearson rocks.  Just saying.  She'll bend over backwards for you, whether you are a student or a student teacher!

3×10^0. Is it okay to be bad at math if English is more your thing?

Man, I sure hope so!  I mean, I think it's important to reach your full potential in all areas in school, but some people are clearly more inclined to one or the other.  I think that's ok.

0.4×10^1. How does this video make you feel?

It makes me feel like I never want Myla to be in pageants.  Pageant satires would be acceptable, though.

500×10^-2. What do you like/not like about math?

I like that there is (usually) a specific right answer.  I like pretty graphs.

I dislike the confusing aspect of it. I don't like things where they start talking about "i" or something, and it's not even a real number.  What does that even mean, algebra teachers?!  How can you teach someone an imaginary number?   That's like teaching someone about unicorns and making them find the right one.

0.006×10^3. What makes someone a nerd?

I don't know, maybe wearing socks and sandals?  Or making jokes about matlab.

7×10^0. Who is the nerdiest person you know?

     Not sure.

80×10^-1. What is the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done?

Dave and I watched the original Tron on one of our first "dates."  I fell asleep, which probably made him angry.

0.9×10^1. Do you think GraphJam is funny?

Yes.  I love a good graph.

10×10^1. Have you ever used math outside of school?

Yes and no.  No, I don't use calculus or the sine and cosine buttons on my calculator in real life (shout out to Texas Instruments, those buttons work great, I'm sure.  Also, I just checked to see if I spelled those right, and I should probably have called them "functions" instead of "buttons." Whoops).
BUT, I was just talking to Dave the other day about this.  All of these "grown-up" things you do all the time can really screw you over if you don't understand math well or aren't very anal retentive about paperwork, like my husband is (thankfully).  I mean seriously, people my age are taking out loans, buying houses, doing taxes, and so many other things that I think we should be prepared for a little bit more in school...  It makes me wish someone had drilled the concept of complex interest into me way more!  I'll get off my soapbox now.

Open Doors and Laundry Mishaps

A few days ago, I hosted a little play date.  Let's be honest: sometimes the play dates just are as much (or more) for me than they are for Myles!  I get to hang out with cool grown-ups and eat something yummy, and Myla gets to stare blankly at other children who are actually playing. She'll be a social butterfly before we know it.

Anyway, the two other mamas and I were sitting at the table chatting, and the four kiddos all went into our hallway out of view.  One mama said, "Should I go check on them?"  And I responded, "No, I think they'll be ok.  All the doors are shut."  Then the other mama told me, "You know I have kids who can open doors, right?"

Uh, no.  It literally never occurred to me for one second that her four-year-old could open a door!   It just goes to show that Dave and I really only know how to raise a human being from age zero to fourteen months.  After that, they'll probably escape or something.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I was folding some of Myla's laundry and kept noticing these strange little purple stains on several pieces of clothing.  It seemed strange, because I don't really have a purple ink pen that could have fallen into the washing machine. Then as I was folding, Myla said, "Mama?" and handed something to me.  It was definitely a blueberry.  This isn't too crazy, because we have been eating blueberries around here lately.

BUT, the question still remains: Is this just a blueberry that had somehow fallen into my baby's clothing basket, or is this a blueberry that has already gone through my child's digestive tract, if you know what I mean.

(Do you know what I mean?  We do cloth diaper, y'all).

I'm going to try not to think about it.

Just a Girl and her Best Friends

Myla is slowly becoming a bit more social with other kids, but there is no doubt who her besties are:  Laci Wiener Kemp and Penny Lane Livingston.  (Laci chose to keep her last name when Dave and I got married).

Here are some typical morning activities around our house:

One important thing to note here: I realize that many people find dog mouths to be disgusting, and I understand (sort of).  I did stop taking video footage at the peak of the dachshund tongue action.  BUT, I think it's more important to note that this tortured canine is licking my baby's face instead of biting it off.  What a gem.

There are two important things to note here: 1) Myla was not injured during the making of this video.  Her angry scream is typical when Penny comes to take the toy back.  If she was really upset, I doubt she would keep doing back for more.  Every. Day.  2) See the creepy snowman by the front door?  Yea, I'm good at decorating.

Ten on V-day

Questions provided by Mrs. Roots and Rings herself.  Go here to link up!

1. How do you feel about Valentine’s Day?
I don't feel really strongly about it either way.  I think it's always nice to show someone you love them, so if Valentine's Day is a reason to do something special, then what's wrong with that?

2. Are you in love?
     Yes.

3. What is your favorite love song?
     Baby Got Back

4. Did your parents do anything for you on Valentine’s Day when you were a child?
I have no idea.  I generally don't have a great memory...  When we were older, like high-school aged, I remember my dad took all his girls out for a fancy dinner since we were all freshly dumped or something.  It was sort of like a broken hearts night, except my mom wasn't broken hearted. He gave us these sweet little speeches.  It was nice.

5. What is your love language? (Click here if you want to take the quiz.)
Apparently, I tied for words of affirmation and quality time.  So if you don't have a lot of time to spend with me, just tell me nice things, and we should be good.

6. How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Gifts? Dinner?
We usually stay in.  This year we are having homemade pizza night, which I love because Dave is the pizza chef, and he hasn't screwed one up yet.  As far as gifts, this is what I got Dave this year:
 We go all out.

7. What is your favorite flower?
I don't really know anything about flowers, but I do like tulips because they're pretty.

8. What is your favorite love story? (Book and/or movie.)
This is really tough.  Much like with songs, there are so many great stories that I love for all different reasons.  I guess I will say Redeeming Love, because once I got into it, it kept me up at night trying to find out how it ends.  Also, it's a love story that parallels God's love for us, so that's kind of hard to beat.   I also loved The Kite Runner.  Although parts of it were downright depressing, the story of redemption made me bawl like a baby at the ending.

9. What is the most romantic thing someone has ever done for you? Or you have done for someone?
Dave married me, and I thought that was pretty romantic.

10. How did you meet your spouse/significant other?
I met him through my sister who met him through her best friend, Andy.  My sister and Dave lived in the same apartment complex, and he texted her "Pancakes?" one morning while I was staying with her one weekend while I was still in college.  I didn't try any of the pancakes, though.  If I had, we probably would have started dating a lot sooner.

Just a Few Thoughts

On pregnancy and child rearing:
  • I don't think it's realistic to tell pregnant women that they shouldn't lick brownie batter.
  • On a related note, I will no longer be volunteering to make dessert for our community group.  It only results in the consumption of at least 5 total brownies (cooked/uncooked) before even making it to group.
  • For the first time the other day, I found myself falling asleep on the couch while watching my baby.  She was playing only feet away from me, but I could feel myself drifting into dreamland every now and then only to be awoken by a "Mama?" and a sweet face staring at me.  I have never felt worse about myself.  I was certain that CPS would come knocking at my door at any minute.  Praise Jesus, we survived, and Myla went down for a late nap so I could rest and become a new creation without mommy guilt.

On man and his apps:
We have a first-generation Ipad that Dave uses most of the time.  He likes to waste time playing random games (much like I waste time on Facebook).  Anyway, I decided to try and find an app or two that Myla could use.  I was looking for something really simple with shapes or colors or something.  So, I fumbled around and made my way to the App store (only after asking Dave, "How do I get to the app store??").  I searched for free "baby" apps, and looked at some that had good ratings.  I ended up downloading "Rescue Fluffy," because Myla likes puppy dogs.  Well, it was a bust.  It was far too complicated for a baby, but I didn't know how to delete it, so I left it there.  The next night, I spied Dave playing an unfamiliar game.  Sure enough, he was rescuing Fluffy.  Twenty  minutes later, I saw him doing things like adopting a saint bernard from the shelter and grooming fluffy.  I'll let you know if he makes a successful rescue or not.

On having low standards in life:
  • I can't stop streaming Sister Wives.
